Disability coverage for blind users: SSI, SSDI, ADA.

In the United States, visually impaired adults can access several federal and state programs. Here is how to qualify for SSI, SSDI, ADA accommodations and Section 504 — and how each helps fund AI visual assistance like Lumyeye.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI provides a monthly stipend to low-income adults and children who are blind or disabled. The Social Security Administration considers you "blind" if your central vision is 20/200 or worse in the better eye with best correction, or if your visual field is 20 degrees or less. Apply at ssa.gov.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

SSDI is for adults who worked and paid Social Security taxes long enough but can no longer work due to blindness or other disabilities. SSDI eligibility opens access to Medicare after 24 months.

ADA Title I (workplace)

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires employers of 15+ employees to provide reasonable accommodations. This includes AI reading and description tools like Lumyeye on a work iPhone or Android. Submit a written request with a doctor's note.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

Section 504 applies to federally funded programs (schools, hospitals, public agencies). Visually impaired students can request accommodations including assistive software. K-12 students follow the IEP/504 plan route through their school district.

State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR)

Every state runs a VR agency that funds assistive technology for working-age adults. Lumyeye Pro qualifies as workplace AT. Search "Vocational Rehabilitation [your state]".

Veterans Affairs (VA)

Veterans with vision loss can access the VA Blind Rehabilitation Service, which funds AT including AI apps. Contact your VIST coordinator at your nearest VA medical center.
