How to get insurance reimbursement for visual aids.

US insurance coverage for visual aids depends on your situation: Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, FSA/HSA, VA, IRS. Here's a clear map for blind and visually impaired users.

Medicare (65+)

Medicare Part B covers some "durable medical equipment" but generally excludes apps and consumer electronics. Medicare Advantage plans sometimes cover assistive tech as a supplemental benefit — check your specific plan.

Medicaid (low income)

Coverage varies by state. Many state Medicaid programs cover assistive technology through HCBS waivers or EPSDT for children. Ask your case manager about "vision aids" or "assistive technology".

Private insurance

Major private insurers (Aetna, UnitedHealth, Blue Cross) increasingly cover digital therapeutics with an ophthalmologist's prescription. Submit a pre-authorization request with a CPT/HCPCS code from your provider.

FSA / HSA (Flexible Spending / Health Savings Accounts)

Lumyeye subscriptions qualify as "qualified medical expenses" under IRS Publication 502 (assistive technology for blindness or low vision). Use your FSA/HSA debit card directly, or submit receipts for reimbursement.

IRS medical expense deduction

If you itemize on Schedule A and your medical expenses exceed 7.5% of AGI, you can deduct Lumyeye subscriptions. Keep receipts and a doctor's letter that states "assistive technology required for low vision".
