Understanding diabetic retinopathy
Daily symptoms.
Type 1 or type 2 diabetes damages the small retinal vessels. The non-proliferative form is silent then blurry; the proliferative form is severe with abnormal vessels and hemorrhages. Diabetic macular edema affects central vision.
Patchy vision
Dark or blurry areas appear randomly in the visual field. Some letters of a word disappear.
Floaters
Black moving spots, threads or "flies" cross the vision. Sign of retinal hemorrhage.
Variable vision
Sharpness changes with blood sugar levels. One day you read fine, the next not at all.
Central edema
The macula thickens, blurring reading and faces - similar to AMD.
