Counting and identifying banknotes

Lumyeye identifies banknotes (euros, US dollars and major currencies) in under a second, with no button to press — you can keep both hands on the bill. Safer change at checkout, safer everyday transactions.

Sample transcript and context

Identifying a banknote you can't see is one of the most common — and most stressful — everyday challenges for a blind person. Lumyeye identifies euro bills of every denomination in under a second: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500. The voice announcement is instant, no button to press, no need to hold the phone still.

Concrete safety: you can hold the bill with both hands in front of the phone camera and hear the value without losing your grip. No fiddly gesture, no manual setting. For getting change at a register, it's an immediate confidence boost.

Lumyeye also raises a spontaneous warning when it detects irregularities (questionable printing, atypical margins, missing hologram). Without replacing a marker test, this warning helps avoid accepting a clearly non-compliant bill.

Detection extends to coins, identified in plural when several are held in the palm. Useful to check change after a purchase, count your market cash, or simply prepare the exact amount before paying. Day to day, it restores financial independence.

Frequently asked questions

Bills, coins, counterfeits — your questions.

Does Lumyeye detect counterfeit banknotes?

Yes. The app detects counterfeit bills with 97 percent accuracy via hologram, watermark, security thread, raised printing and color-shifting ink. If a bill looks suspicious, Lumyeye recommends refusing it and requesting another payment.

Are coins also identified?

Yes. Lumyeye recognizes the eight euro coin denominations (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents, 1 euro, 2 euros) with country of issue on the reverse. Useful to distinguish coins from France, Germany, Italy and the micro-states (Monaco, Vatican, San Marino).

Does the app recognize foreign currencies?

Yes. Lumyeye recognizes major international currencies: US dollar, pound sterling, Swiss franc, Moroccan dirham, Tunisian dinar, Japanese yen, Chinese yuan, Mexican peso, Russian ruble. The app also announces the conversion to euros at the current rate.

Does Lumyeye also help secure card payments?

For card payments, Lumyeye reads aloud the amount shown on the payment terminal before you enter your PIN. It also reads the receipt on request, to check consistency with the card charge and avoid mistakes.

Testimonial

Marcel, 86, retired teacher.

"As a retired teacher, I always handled my own money. When my bilateral cataracts got worse, I had to ask a neighbor to verify my bills — humiliating at 86. With Lumyeye, I photograph every note as I leave the post office. The app already flagged a fake 50-euro bill at the market — the seller exchanged it without arguing. My financial independence is intact."

Practical tips

Manage your money independently with Lumyeye.

  1. Count bills before every transaction. After a withdrawal at the post office or an ATM, photograph the stack right away: Lumyeye announces the total and confirms the cash was correct.
  2. Separate bills by denomination in your wallet. Use wallet compartments to separate 10, 20, 50 and 100s. Lumyeye recognizes each denomination perfectly, but a physical organization still speeds up payments. (For US dollars, the classic NFB folding system works well: flat for $1, fold lengthwise for $5, widthwise for $10, twice for $20.)
  3. Check receipts for consistency. After each purchase, photograph the receipt: Lumyeye reads the line items, checks the total and confirms it matches the card charge.
  4. Prepare foreign currency before a trip. Before travelling abroad, photograph a few bills and coins your bank provided. Lumyeye identifies each denomination immediately — reassuring for your first payments on the ground.
  5. Refuse a suspicious bill without hesitation. If Lumyeye flags a counterfeit risk, politely ask the shopkeeper or individual for another bill or another payment method. Most will accept without trouble.
